Zaterdag 14 oktober: Buiten de Binary dag

Scroll down for English)  (Direct naar het programma / To the programme)

Beyond the Binary Day 2017
Clear answers can be nice. Like when you want to know whether you should take the train of the bus, to Arnhem of Nijmegen. But when we try to put clear labels on people a lot gets lost. Between man and woman, between straight and gay, between sexual and asexual, between all labels there is space, the space of.. well, of everything else.

On October 14th, 2107, the Transgendergroup Nijmegen holds it’s 4th Beyond the Binary day. A day full of workshops, movies, debates, presentations and more about the space beyond labels. To explore that space, give names to it, tear those names of again and most of all to celebrate that space.

Drop by and discover the versatility and fluidity of sexuality, gender, desire, fantasy, appearance, personality, body, identity and everything else. And bring your own versatility of course! Scroll down to see the programme.

Saterday October 14th, 2017 from 10:30, at the Roze Huis and cafe Marcus Antonius, St. Antoniusplaats 1 en 15, Nijmegen. Free event, no registration
The Pink House is wheelchair accessible (via the side entrance) and has a wheelchair accessible bathroom, Marcus Antonius is not wheelchair accessible. Contact us if you need more accessibility information.

We’re proud to announce that Sophie Labelle, author of the wellknown webcomic Assigned Male, is with us all the way from Montreal, Canada! Her comics in which gender norms and privilege are seen through the experience of young trans and gendervariant kids are read around the world and she has producted numberous great books and zines on gender. Sophie visits our Buiten de Binary festival as a stop on her first European Tour. She’ll talk about her work as an author, artist and public speaker and her experiences as a trans woman doing art on the internet. She’ll also be selling and signing some of her books and comics.

Presentation on Intersectionality by prof. dr. Mieke Verloo
We are have more than one identity. Our race, sexuality, gender, social class, etc. all form parts of who we are. Intersectionality is the study of how these identities overlap and how they effect us when we face systems of oppression. Each element or trait of a person is inextricably linked with all of the other elements of who they are and if we face more than once form of oppression the combination of those forms of oppression creates unique forms of violence.
Mieke Verloo is professor of comparative politics and inequality issues at the department of Political Science and is affiliated with the Institute for Gender Studies at Radboud University and one of Europe’s the leading researchers on intersectionality and oppression. Her focus is on how gender inequality relates to other axes of privilege and power, such as race/ethnicity, class and sexuality.

Researching Gender and the Brain by Dr. Annelies (A.V.) Kleinherenbrink,
Are brains male or female? And if they are, is that because femininity and masculinity are ‘hardwired’ or because cultural context shapes the brain? Exploring these different options, dr. Annelies Kleinherenbrink discusses the social implications of ‘the sexed brain’ versus ‘the plastic brain’ and asks how we can escape the ongoing nature-nurture debate about gender roles.”

Workshop: Decolonizing Gender
In this lecture+workshop, we will observe historical facts from decolonial societies and discuss how the colonization and white supremacy forced uniform spiritual beliefs, heteronormativity and gender binary to various decolonial societies. We will discuss how white supremacy used policy on sex, body and gender appearance to facilitate exploitation, and how imperialism continues to affect our perspective on history and the queer struggle.

Transanders panel

Film: United in Anger. A History of Act Up.
United in Anger: A History of ACT UP is a 2012 documentary film about the beginning and progress of the AIDS activist movement from the perspective of the people fighting the epidemic. Archival footage with oral histories of members of ACT UP depicts the history of civil disobedience against corporate greed, social indifference, and government negligence in the face of AIDS.

English, no subtitles.

Marcia Deville: A Rock musician’s journey before to after transition.
Marcia Deville played bass in various bands in California, Germany and Belgium for three decades and in 2014 she became front singer of her own Rock band: Red Baroness & the Murder Kings. She also developped solo acoustic performances as The Red Baroness. Marcia speaks about her life on the road as a rock musician, feminist & trans woman.

Potluck

Workshop Slash Fiction
Suppose the characters from your favorite book/series/movie were queer? Suppose they had adventurous sex? Or fell madly in love with each other? Does that sound like something to read or write about? Well, you can! Slash fiction is the production of erotic fiction based on famous stories. It is popular on the internet but slash is as old as fiction itself and often takes a rebelious attitude towards literature, taking control of classic stories and making them into worlds for sexual exploration or satire. In this workshop we were discuss why people write erotic stories about their favorite characters and what to expect in an online slash community. We will also take up a pen and write… whatever we want!

Talkshow Queer Activism by Olave Basabose
Olave Basabose speaks with queer organisers about how to create a strong network for intersectional activism and how to create change while taking care of each other. Participants are Manon la Decadence (Gender Bending Queer Party), Nikki Veldkamp (International Socialists), Rense Havinga (Buiten de Binary day and more stuff) en Olave (host)

Afterparty with live music by The Red Baroness

After playing bass in various bands in California, Germany and Belgium for three decades, Marcia Deville decided that she would create her own Rock band as a female fronted singer in 2014: Red Baroness & the Murder Kings. As the Red Baroness she also developped a solo acoustic set singing and playing songs by Red Baroness & the Murder Kings and solo songs that wouldn’t fit within the bands power rock style.
